Shroud Cay: Explore this untouched island sanctuary

Shroud Cay is an island within the Exumas Land and Sea Park with rocky terrain and white sandy shores. The surrounding hillocks act as natural breakwaters that provide a protective embrace to the island. You can expect shallow waters and a few waves here, making it a perfect destination for exploring by tender or jet ski. Shroud Cay epitomizes untouched wilderness that is a sanctuary for diverse animals. As you cruise through, you might even spot the island's famous residents, sea turtles.

Shroud Cay is named after the shroud, also known as the rope to lower the sail of a ship. During the 18th and 19th centuries, this island was a haven for pirates. To this day, the island remains a refuge for anyone looking for a secluded getaway. There are no marinas on the island, but for those arriving with smaller yachts, there's a mooring field on the island's northern tip. This can accommodate vessels up to 65 feet and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. You can anchor offshore and take a dinghy to land for larger yachts.

You can check out Camp Driftwood Beach and hike to the highest point on the cay for some incredible views. There's not much left of it today, but the camp was established in the 1960s by a sailor who lived aboard his boat in Shroud Cay.

If you're into water activities, kayaking is necessary, as Shroud Cay has mangrove channels. Make sure you time your visit with a mid-high rising tide for the best experience in Sanctuary Creek lazy river, where idle speed is allowed with your dinghy. While Sanctuary Creek allows motorized vessels at idle speed, the rest of Shroud Cay does not. But you can jump in your kayak or paddleboard and explore shallow creeks or estuaries.

If you want to relax, there are beaches to choose from. One of the best is the beach on the Sound side of the island. The beach has very shallow waters and several hundred yards of sandbar that is perpendicular to the creek. This makes a great place for yacht charterers with kids, as the beach is calm with gentle waves and safe for swimming even on high tide.

You can also go snorkeling or diving at Wax Cut Drift Dive or take a thrilling ride in the Washing Machine. This unique spot has zipping currents that circle a small beach peninsula—jump in on one side, and the current will carry you around to the other, which is how it got its fun nickname.

You could easily spend weeks exploring Shroud Cay's anchorages, hiking trails, and snorkeling its reefs without running out of things to see. Anyone on a yacht charter near this little slice of paradise shouldn't miss the chance to drop anchor and soak it all in. Start planning your Bahamas yacht charter today and experience the incredible beauty of this untouched gem aboard a luxurious yacht.
