Raja Ampat: The Four Kings and The Last Paradise on Earth
Majestic and magnificent, Raja Ampat is known as "The Last Paradise on Earth." This group of 1,500 islands and UNESCO Global Geopark is celebrated as one of the most biodiverse marine regions on the planet. From emerald jungles to ancient rock formations dating back to the Silurian-Devonian era, or more than 400 million years ago, Raja Ampat is a symphony of natural wonders.
The region is located in Indonesia’s West Papua Province, and the name “Raja Ampat” literally means "Four Kings" after its main islands, Waigeo, Misool, Salawati, and Batanta. Yachting through Raja Ampat offers unrivalled access to some of the world's most vibrant marine ecosystems. Waigeo, also known as Amber, is the largest of the main islands and provides a mix of lush jungles, serene lagoons, and vibrant local culture. Take the chance to spot the Red Bird of Paradise in its natural environment, as well as visit the town of Waisai, which is the starting point for many yachting itineraries. At North Waigeo, a local art performance called Suling Tambur is done during special events. Explore North Waigeo and learn about local customs.
As part of the Coral Triangle, the region also boasts some of the richest coral reefs in the world. It is home to more than 2000 marine species, including about 600 species of corals. That’s almost 75% of all known species on Earth! The best island to dive into this kaleidoscope of underwater life is Misool, where diving and swimming with various sea animals, from bull sharks to the elusive pygmy seahorses, are available.
Batanta Island, the smallest of the "Four Kings," is famed for its beaches and rainforest. Salawati is known for its dense mangrove forest, which makes it a haven for birds and perfect for birdwatching. At Salawati, remnants of WWII are still preserved. Explore them and learn about the history of the region during that time period.
Beyond the four main islands, there are also several notable islands worth visiting. Gam Island is known for its beaches and hidden lagoons. A narrow waterway between Waigeo and Gam Island, along Kabui Bay, called the Passage Strait, offers stunning scenery of steep hills, sharp limestone, and dense jungle. It is an excellent spot for kayaking or a slow cruise while savouring local dishes. Arborek Island has some of the best places to dive in the world, with opportunities to encounter manta rays right along its jetty. Accessible by a short walk, Piaynemo is renowned for its magnificent panoramic views of karst island formations, offering one of Raja Ampat's most memorable sights. At Kawe Island, cross the equator in style while enjoying laid-back lounging in its secluded coves.
