Nafplion: Historic charm on the Argolic Gulf

Nafplion is one of those places that just makes sense for a yacht stop. It’s small, walkable, full of history, and right on the calm waters of the Argolic Gulf. This was the first capital of modern Greece, and its name goes way back to ancient legend — said to come from Nauplios, a mythical sailor and the son of Poseidon. You can feel the layers of time in the old stone streets, the forts, and even the cafés. It’s an easy-going place with many things to see and do, whether you’re here for a few hours or a few days on a yacht charter.

The town itself is built on a curve of the coast, backed by hills and guarded by three old fortresses. The most famous is Palamidi, sitting high above the town. You can climb the 999 steps or drive up if you're not in the mood to sweat. Either way, the top gives you an unforgettable look over red rooftops, blue sea, and the tiny islet of Bourtzi Castle just offshore. Down by the harbor, things are lively but never too loud. It's a great spot to anchor or dock your yacht, with shops, tavernas, and bars lining the waterfront. The old town is best explored on foot, with narrow flower-filled streets and neoclassical houses around every corner. Syntagma Square is where people gather. Grab a coffee, check out the museums, or just watch the world go by.

If you're looking for a swim, Arvanitia Beach is just a short walk from the town center. It’s a peaceful spot, tucked away with crystal-clear waters and a scenic walking path that hugs the rocky coastline. If you're after a bit more space, head to Karathona Beach—though it's a little farther out, it’s much larger and perfect for a laid-back day in the sun. For those craving a livelier vibe, Tolo Beach, further down the coast, offers a long stretch of golden sand and plenty of local eateries to grab a bite after the swim.

A yacht charter here also gives you the chance to explore beyond Nafplion. You can cruise to nearby villages, anchor in peaceful bays, or take day trips inland to places like Mycenae and Epidaurus. Nafplion makes a great starting point for a Peloponnese charter. There’s history, sea, sunshine, and everything’s within reach. See Greece yacht charters available and start your trip from Nafplion.
