A dreamlike yachting destination filled with thrilling adventures and new discoveries

Misool Island: The Heart of Raja Ampat

Famed for its heart-shaped lagoon, yachting in Misool is an experience unlike any other. It spans over an archipelago of jungle-covered limestone islets, hidden lagoons, and pristine coral reefs. Beyond that, Misool is also home to some of the most spectacular beaches, secret caves, and ancient petroglyphs in all of Indonesia. This is why Misool is aptly called the heart of Raja Ampat.

Like most itineraries, a trip to Misool starts at Sorong, the gateway to Raja Ampat. From there, the first stop is usually Waigeo Island, Misool’s most oversized brother island. However, changes to the usual route can be organised to start right at Misool first. Visiting Misool must begin with its Misool Marine Reserve. In this 300,000-acre protected paradise, snorkelling among rare corals and spotting giant manta rays, epaulette sharks, and the elusive Misool rainbowfish is possible. Head to Lenmakana Lake to witness stingless jellyfish glide through the water. On land, trek through the dense jungle to Harfat Peak, the highest viewpoint in the region, offering breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding isles. Tomolol Cave showcases ancient 5,000-year-old petroglyphs, adding a historical and cultural flair to the trip.

Pulau Misool Nature Reserve is great for birdwatching as it is teeming with rare bird species and untouched mangrove forests. Sunmalelen Island, known locally as the “Forbidden Place,” is another intriguing stop, with its eerie rock formations and hidden human skulls from ancient tribal conflicts.
