Mayaguana Island Yacht Charter
The easternmost island in the Bahamas that has virtually no other tourists in sight
Mayaguana Island: An undisturbed oasis in Bahamas
If you're looking for an anchorage in one of the most "out" of all Bahamas' outer islands, then Mayaguana, an island on the remote extremities of the southeastern Bahamas, is the perfect place. This undisturbed oasis has truly stayed connected to its past, as it has seen little development since the day the Lucayans lived in it. So, for yacht charterers wanting a retreat far from the bustling tourist hubs, this island is for you.
Mayaguana holds onto its roots as the only island in the Bahamas to retain its original Arawak name, which pays homage to a unique breed of iguana found here. With just 300 residents living in its three settlements—Abraham's Bay, Pirate's Well, and Betsy Bay—you'll immediately notice the peaceful and intimate vibe of the island. These villages, all within a short 15-minute stroll of each other, make for a leisurely day of exploration during your yacht journey.
One of its settlements, Abraham's Bay, is considered a top attraction. This part of the island is home to historic landmarks, like the lighthouse that offers a view of the island. Bird lovers on board will also be fascinated by the diverse wildlife found in the area, like the endangered Bahama Parrot.
Animal lovers will find Mayaguana a true delight. The island is home to the hutia, a rabbit-sized rodent once considered extinct until the 1960s. For a unique encounter, take a tender to nearby Booby Cay. This small island, just east of Mayaguana, is a haven for wildlife, including flocks of brown booby birds, goats, starfish, and small rock iguanas who love a treat of fruits and vegetables. The waters around Booby Cay are so calm that you can even swim between the mainland and this nature-filled islet.
Spanning over 16,800 acres, the Northwest Point National Park has untouched white beaches with an expanse of dense mangroves. You can trek at the top of the park's highest point for yacht charterers who love hiking. Meanwhile, the settlement of Pirate's Well is a fascinating spot to explore. Some natural limestone caves, both above and below the water, are said to be once a spot for pirates' hidden treasures.
You can also visit Boiling Hole in Mayaguana, a natural wonder, essentially a sinkhole filled with water. Its name was derived from the bubbling of the water caused by an underground network of channels connecting the hole to the ocean, creating the impression that it is boiling. Other locations to visit if you're looking for white sand beaches to play with your water toys are Nares Point, Betsy Bay, Samana Cay, and others.
In the evenings, a stroll along Horse Pond Beach can become a fun crabbing adventure. Crab meat, a staple in the island's cuisine, is often caught in the limestone crevices or bushes near the beach—an authentic island activity worth trying.
As you anchor your yacht in Mayaguana, you can spend your days just enjoying the sun, playing with your water toys, or simply savoring the solitude. If this hidden gem has sparked your interest, start planning your dream escape by browsing the fleet of superyachts available for charter.

When?
The best time to visit is also during the dry season, from November to April. During this period, temperatures are pleasant, averaging around 25°C (77°F), with the driest month being March, receiving an average rainfall of only 9 mm. This makes it an excellent time for outdoor activities such as beachcombing, bird watching, and exploring the island’s natural beauty.
