Long Island: A strikingly diverse island

The Bahamas isn’t just about popular spots like Paradise Island or Grand Bahama. There’s a long list of equally stunning Out Islands waiting to be explored. One example is Long Island located along the Tropic of Cancer. This 80-mile-long island is known for its rugged cliffs on one side and sloping sandy beaches on the other providing a striking contrast. Long Island with its two different kinds of natural beauty in one is the perfect place to explore aboard your luxury yacht.

Long Island was one of Christopher Columbus’ first stops during his journey to the New World. He named it Fernandina, but before that, the Arawak Indians had called it Yuma. The island has a long history of being uninhabited too until later on settlements and salt production hubs were established. Today, this enchanting place is now called Long Island due to its impressive length and its economy relying heavily on tourism. Despite this, there are no huge resorts nor chain restaurants on Long Island as this place offers an authentic barefoot bahamian experience.

On land, tourists can explore Clarence Town, the capital of Long Island and home to the twin churches of St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church. This twin-towered architecture is both 40 feet and can be a place for tourists to have a solemn moment inside.

Meanwhile, Long Island’s four miles of crescent beach is an ideal playground for yacht charterers wanting to relax on soft sugar-fine sands. But there are even more wonders beyond what on land and on the shores. For those wanting to score a bonefish, Long Island’s Bahama Bank is the perfect place for anglers to test their skills.

For those ready for some underwater adventure, Long Island’s Conception Island Wall is a magnificent diving site that offers impressive depths. There are more to see beyond coral reefs as Long Island has wreck diving sites too like the MV Comberbach near Cape Santa Maria. This British freighter is located 100 feet deep in Atlantic waters and is now home to various fishes. For an even more exhilarating dive, you can also try shark diving in Long Island. But what’s considered as the most iconic feature in Long Island is Dean’s Blue Hole, the world’s second-deepest saltwater blue hole. Here you can dive in its 663-foot depth, or for those who don’t dare to do so can just swim, float, or admire this masterpiece on the depth of your superyacht.

Long Island is not only about the beach and the dive site, as this place has Hamilton’s cave, the largest known cavern system in the Bahamas that is believed to be a place where Lucayan Indians lived around 500 AD. In this place you will see stunning stalagmites, stalactites, and passageways.

For those who prefer quieter moments, Long Island offers stunning views of sunrises and sunsets over the water, best enjoyed from the deck of a luxury yacht. Start planning your yacht charter now and discover the incredible superyachts available to take you on this unforgettable Bahamian adventure.
