Inagua: The Birding Capital of the Bahamas

Known as the Birding Capital of the Bahamas, Inagua is the country's third largest island and southernmost part. Its flat, low-lying landscape is home to one of the world's largest colonies of West Indian flamingos—outnumbering the island's human population. With its untouched beauty and abundance of rare wildlife, Inagua is a dream destination for yacht charterers who love bird-watching and unique wildlife experiences.

With calm, clear waters and warm, sunny weather year-round, Inagua is a perfect stop on any Bahamas yacht itinerary. The island's expansive savannah is home to roaming cattle, donkeys, and boars, while the famous Lake Rosa serves as a nesting ground for pink flamingos and roseate spoonbills. At Union Creek Reserve, you can spot green turtles being raised before they're released back into the ocean. This sprawling windward island, with views stretching to Cuba, is also home to various wild animals, making it a favorite destination for sportsmen and naturalists onboard.

Take a ride on your tender to explore Inagua's shores, where welcoming locals are always happy to share tips for the best spots. Start with Matthew Town, the island's central hub. You can see the famous Morton Salt Ponds and the expansive Inagua National Park here. Other intriguingly named spots you should also visit are Doghead Point, Mutton Fish Point, and Devil's Point, which add a bit of mystery and charm to your adventure.

A short trip north brings you to Little Inagua, a tiny, uninhabited island about 78 square kilometers (30 square miles) in size. This quiet gem is home to birdlife, wild goats, and donkeys. Beneath its waters lies a treasure trove of history, with shipwrecks like the Santa Rosa (1599) and Le Count De Paix (1713), remnants of pirates, and Columbus' early voyages. Stubb's Cay is also a diver's dream. The coral reefs surrounding the Cay have abundant fish and marine life that snorkelers and scuba divers will enjoy.

Back on land, you don’t want to miss the Great Inagua Lighthouse. It ranks as one of the Caribbean’s tallest, standing tall at 162 feet. This lighthouse was built in the 19th century, and up to this day it still offers the same magnificent views of the island’s coastline and surrounding waters. Another must-see is the Morton Salt Company, a cornerstone of Inagua’s economy for over a century. Take a tour of this historic salt facility to see the salt-making process up close, all while enjoying the striking views of the vivid salt ponds.

Are you ready to leave the crowds behind? Escape to Inagua and embrace its natural splendor on your next yacht charter adventure. Begin your journey by exploring the stunning collection of superyachts available for Bahamas charters.
