A Paradise of Birds and Corals, Where Nature Still Reigns
Gam Island is the biggest island after the four main islands in Raja Ampat
It has some of the most amazing jungles that offer birdwatching and trekking adventures. Along its coast, the underwater world is teeming with marine life, perfect for an extraordinary diving and snorkelling excursion. This is why yachting in Gam Island is full of adventure and fun memories.
Most charters start at The Passage, the narrow strait between Gam and Waigeo. This strait is also home to exotic marine animals. Drop anchor at Beser Bay and find the most heat-adaptive corals in Raja Ampat brimming with manta rays, stingless jellyfish, and even the elusive walking shark. Gam Island also has mesmerising lagoons. Glide through Gam’s blue-water mangroves, past orchid-covered karst islets, and into hidden lagoons, some accessible only at low tide.
A hidden lagoon near Gam Bay, reachable only during low tide by gliding through a cave, is home to bat colonies and swarms of non-stinging moon jellyfish. Kabui Bay is a favourite attraction due to the abundance of wild species that inhabit the bay, including dolphins and sea eagles. Kabui Bay is also home to hidden lagoons and ancient burial sites.
Inland, the Sawinggrai and Yenbeser villages are home to the red birds of paradise. Staying in these villages will give opportunities to watch red birds of paradise perform their mesmerising courtship dances at sunrise. More than its natural allure, Gam Island is also famous for being the research site of Alfred Russel Wallace. Take a guided tour and follow Wallace’s footsteps from Yenbeser to Dore Mkun lagoon and the replica of his famed ‘Dwarf’s house.”
