With 330 islands and only a third inhabited, Fiji offers an ocean of possibilities, from secluded anchorages to cultural treasures, all wrapped in warm island smiles.
A Paradise Filled With Happiness And Exploration
In the heart of the South Pacific Ocean lies Fiji. It is shaped like a Fibonacci sequence due to it being directly above the end of the New Hebrides Trench. It is renowned for its pristine palm-fringed beaches, friendly people, and world-class yachting opportunities. The country comprises 330 islands and 500 smaller islets spanning 18,300 square kilometers. Yet, only 110 of these islands are inhabited, leaving the rest for you to explore in isolation.
The main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are the most populated islands. Viti Levu has the capital, Suva, where the calming green environment blends with the urban atmosphere dotted with colonial-era architecture. Viti Levu also has two of the main international airports, Nadi and Nausori. The island also offers several activities, like hiking towards hidden waterfalls, ziplining through forest canopies, or thrilling 4WD adventures.
Meanwhile, Vanua Levu's atmosphere is remote and rustic. Also known as the “Friendly North,” it is filled with charming coastal towns, rainforests, and lots of secluded bays to explore. Savusavu, named “Fiji’s Hidden Paradise,” is famous for its geothermal springs and the historic marina of Copra Shed Marina. Vanua Levu is also a gateway to Namena Marine Reserve and Rainbow Reef, famed for its soft corals.
Speaking of soft corals, Fiji is also called the "Soft Coral Capital of the World” for being home to more than 390 coral species, many of which are endemic. This makes Fiji a dream destination for divers. Some diving spots are the Coral Coast, located at Viti Levu, and the Great Astrolabe Reef on Kadavu Island. There’s a great chance of swimming with sharks, manta rays, turtles, and dolphins.
Northwest of Viti Levu is the famed filming location of Blue Lagoon, Yasawa Archipelago. Its white powdery sands, lush vegetation, and crystal-blue waters are perfect for a laid-back sunbathing experience and beachcombing. For the romantics and honeymooners, the Mamanuca Islands provide a magnificent hideaway with its luxury resorts and calm lagoons. One of these islands, Monuriki, was the filming site for Cast Away. However, for a more castaway experience, the eastern islands of Lau and Moala group offer a slower pace of life and a stronger connection to nature.
Another way to experience Fiji is through its freshwater adventures. Upper Navua Canyon provides thrilling river tubing or white-water rafting in its breathtaking canyons and waterfalls. Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park offers hiking trails that combine history and geology for a unique experience.
