Cooper Island: A quiet slice of paradise

If you ever dreamed of getting off the grid in the Caribbean, then visiting this small, hilly island south of Tortola is a gem. Cooper Island is from the Little Sisters group, which has always been popular with the yacht charter crowd. It offers the perfect anchorage for anyone who wants to feel remote while enjoying a few luxuries. Its thick forests, golden sandy beaches, and clear waters make Cooper Island your perfect hideaway.

Cooper Island is known to be yacht-friendly. It has 30 mooring buoys at Manchioneel Bay, accommodating vessels up to 18 meters. This main anchorage faces the west, so sunsets here are always stunning. The intimacy of the island is its charm, too, since there are only five private properties and the eco-friendly Cooper Island Beach Resort overlooking the bay.

Snorkeling and diving are the absolute highlights of Cooper Island. Near Manchineel Bay is the shipwreck of “Wreck Alley.” This diving hotspot features four small vessels deliberately sunk to form an artificial reef. You can also visit the internationally well-known wreck of RMS Rhone, which is not that far away from the area. For a unique experience, divers can also see the wreck of a twin-seat airplane at a depth of 10 meters.

One of the best snorkeling sites, too, is in the waters of Cistern Point, and just to the south of Little Carvel Rock, you’ll find the Haulovers, a distinct isthmus that splits the island. There is a small bay here that offers a good anchorage in the sand for proximity to two dive sites.

The Cooper Island Beach Resort is a favorite stop for yacht charter guests. The resort’s standout features include a solar-powered microbrewery crafting refreshing beers and lagers and a coffee bar with tiered outdoor seating overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Its restaurant and rum bar are open to day visitors, serving light Caribbean lunches like conch fritters and tuna salad. More substantial dishes, such as grilled mahi-mahi and Caribbean curries, are available for dinner.

Cooper Island is not just a destination but a convenient stopover on your way to other iconic Virgin Island attractions like The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda. Start your Cooper Island adventure now by browsing luxury superyachts available for charter in the Virgin Islands.
