Cat Island: Home to Mount Alvernia

Located above the Tropic of Cancer and about 325 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale, Cat Island is a tropical paradise named after the pirate Arthur Catt, who once frequented its shores. Originally called "San Salvador," believed to be the gateway to the New World, this island is now considered the perfect getaway for yacht charterers looking to unwind in the quieter corners of the Bahamas.

Cat Island, with 150 square miles of rolling hills, charming villages, and a stunning coastline, is dotted with historical remnants that tell the story of its past. From crumbling 200-year-old slave houses to abandoned stone cottages and the ruins of cotton and sisal plantations, Cat Island's rich history is evident in its landscape.

One of the island’s standout attractions is Mount Alvernia, Como Hill, the highest point in the Bahamas. Rising 206 feet above sea level, it’s crowned by The Hermitage, a stone monastery known as a popular pilgrimage site. This area has views that are second only to those from the decks of your private charter yacht. And while you're exploring, be sure to check out Greenwood Beach and Old Bight Beach for a dose of the island’s natural beauty. If you're up for underwater excitement, head to the Big Blue Hole near Orange Creek—a deep freshwater lake with undercurrents flowing into the sea.

Fernandez Bay on the eastern coast is also considered one of the must-visit locations. Its calm and shallow waters are great for kayaking and paddleboarding and yacht charters with children on board. The bay facing the west side is the perfect vantage point for sunset.

On the southeastern tip of Cat Island, you’ll come across Port Howe, a charming coastal town with stunning white-sand beaches. It’s also home to Port Howe Marine Park, a spot for snorkelling and scuba diving. Meanwhile, Alligator Point in the nearby peninsula is a location suitable for picnicking and birdwatching

Start your journey to the captivating Cat Island by exploring the wide selection of luxury yachts and superyachts available.
