"Island of Clouds" – A Haven of Misty Hilltops and Ethereal Caribbean Beauty
Bequia: A favorite hidden gem among sailors
St. Vincent and the Grenadines of the Caribbean nation is custom-made for yachters looking for a dazzling tableau of all shades of blue. One island that belongs here is Bequia, which usually flies under tourists' radar. This island is known to be the largest in the chain, at only 7 square miles. Because of this, Bequia hits the sweet spot of being large enough to be interesting but small enough to retain a sense of intimacy for yacht charters.
The heart of Bequia, Port Elizabeth, is a little town and the island's only commercial settlement. Its harbor is filled with colorful shops, market stalls, and boutique stores selling everything from handcrafted jewelry to coconut-carved toy boats. Bequia's beaches are mostly within walking distance from here, along the Belmont Walkway, a wooden path that will take you to commercial places and beaches alike.
There are plenty of places on the Caribbean and Atlantic coast to explore in Bequia. Top of the list is the tiny strip of sand not far from Port Elizabeth, the Belmont beach, which is perfect if you have kids onboard as the water here is warm and shallow. On the Caribbean side of the island, you will find 2 of Bequia's most popular beaches known to have the best spot to watch sunset. Princess Margaret Beach is named after the British princess who swam here in 1958. It has a lovely ribbon of golden sand and bars left and right, making it a favorite spot for celebrity cruisers to anchorage. Meanwhile, Lower Bay has the largest stretch of sand and very safe swimming conditions.
Admiralty Bay offers incredible diving opportunities for those who love to explore beneath the waves. Descend into an underwater world where historic shipwrecks rest on the ocean floor, or head to Devil's Table, a renowned snorkeling and dive site teeming with vibrant coral gardens, exotic fish, moray eels, and even the occasional seahorse. With a yacht as your base, these magical dive spots are just a short, tender ride away.
You shouldn't miss the beaches on the Atlantic coast of Bequia too. Friendship Bay offers excellent views of Mustique, Petit Nevis, Isle A Quatre, and other Grenadines. Other beaches on this coast not only provide tremendous views of the neighboring island but also guarantee that it'll be rarely populated by tourists such as Hope Bay, Ravine Bay and Industry Bay.
No visit to Bequia is complete without indulging in its exceptional local cuisine. Step ashore to discover casual beachfront eateries and upscale restaurants. On the East Coast, Firefly Plantation Restaurant and Bagatelle at Bequia Beach Hotel are top choices for those craving gourmet dishes like grilled fish, tender steaks, and flavorful curried conch.
