Anegada Yacht Charter
A coral island paradise with beaches that stretch for miles
Anegada: ringed by the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean.
Anegada is the northernmost corner of the British Virgin Islands and is known to be distinct from its neighbors due to its expansive coral reefs and flat terrain. This is where the name “Anegada” is from, as it translates to “the drowned island” in Spanish. The island is relatively remote and offers miles of nature where you can spot pink flamingos and iguanas on unspoiled beaches. This is where you can unplug and relax on your yacht with the island life you won’t find elsewhere.
Anegada is the only coral and limestone island among the other BVI islands, which are primarily volcanic. Its flat terrain, with the highest point just 8.5 meters above sea level and extensive coral reefs, creates unique navigation challenges. But experienced yacht captains can easily maneuver through the well-marked channel to Setting Point, a safe harbor for visiting yachts.
The island’s crown jewel is the 29-kilometer-long Horseshoe Reef, one of the largest coral reefs in the world. The island is also surrounded by underwater caves, tunnels, and even age-old shipwrecks. Dive to explore the Parramatta, a shipwreck from 1859, or the Rokus, a Greek cargo vessel that sank in 1929. Both sites provide a memorable underwater adventure for divers chartering a yacht in the area.
Anegada’s east side is where you’ll find island-like piles of empty conch shells. This results from generations of local fishermen tossing empty shells into the same area after harvesting. According to the fishermen, keeping the discarded shells in one spot tricks the live conch into thinking the rest of the waters are safe, so they stick around instead of leaving the area. This clever practice helps sustain the local conch population for future harvests. These artificial reefs have also become a thriving nursery for stingrays, nurse sharks, and other marine life.
Nature lovers will be pleased to know there is so much to love in Anegada. Due to its isolated ecosystem, it is easy to spot roaming donkeys, goats, sheep, and the endangered rock iguana native to Anegada. Bird watchers will also fall in love with the place as various shorebirds take residence island-wide. A flock of flamingos that thrive in the salt ponds was also restored, and you can glimpse this striking spectacle in Anegada. During your exploration, visit the nature trail at Bones Bight and the views at Nutmeg Point.
Anegada’s 22 kilometers of untouched beaches are a yacht charter dream. Cow Wreck Beach was named after the shipwreck that carried cow bones. To this day, the beach is a favorite hub for water sports like kiteboarding and windsurfing. Loblolly Bay Beach, another must-visit, is ranked as one of the world’s top beaches. It also features standout restaurants such as Big Bamboo. If you're coming from Cow Wreck Beach, you can visit Keel Point, where the Anegada Beach Club is located.
Anegada is known to be ground zero for flats for fishing or bonefishing. This is actually one of the sought-after sports here. But for a more peaceful activity, go to the Anegada museum to see the locations of over 200 wrecks and some of the recovered booty on display. Another must-see for anyone is the Anegada lighthouse, which was built in 1867 and is known to be the oldest lighthouse in the Caribbean.
Anegada is an eco-tourist’s paradise. Its beauty and incredible views will continue to captivate while offering its visitors a place to lose a sense of time and care. Hurry and explore luxury yachts and superyachts available for charter in the Virgin Islands and start planning your unforgettable journey to Anegada.
