Andros Island: Home to third-largest barrier reef on Earth

Often overlooked in favor of more bustling destinations, Andros is a gem boasting a span of an impressive 2,300 square miles. This island holds many adventure options for lovers of outdoor activities. Here, you can find locations that are perfect for deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. With the islands’ tropical climate you also don’t even need to worry about packing a coat or dealing with the cold.

Andros is composed of three main islands—North Andros, South Andros, and Mangrove Cay. Wherever you might be cruising through, you can expect deserted beaches and flats that makes this destination the bonefishing capital of the world. Known as the oldest diving destination in the Bahamas, Andros also sits close to the world's third-longest barrier reef and a gateway to the Tongue of the Ocean, a deepwater basin. This makes it a haven for divers and snorkelers exploring by tender or directly from your yacht.

North Andros is the island’s capital and home to the Seminole Indian population that are known to be masters in hand-dyeing cotton Androsia fabric and woodworks. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a unique souvenir to remember your yacht charter trip. Over in Central Andros, you can take a leisurely stroll through historic sites, including the over-century-old St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

If you’re a nature lover, you will be pleased to know that Andros Islands have five protected national parks. West Side National Park has more than 1.5 million acres of mangroves that is known to be a nursery habitat crucial for the bonefishing ecosystem. Blue Holes National Park has 40,000 acres of freshwater reservoirs and blue holes. Some of the other more popular spots around the area are the Stargate Blue Hole, El Dorado, and Benjamin's Blue Hole.

As you navigate the winding rivers and explore secluded inlets, you’ll encounter an abundance of wildlife too, including species native to the island. Myth and mystery also add a layer of intrigue, with tales of the Chickcharnee—part-bird, part-man creatures believed to inhabit the trees and bring good fortune—and Lusca, the legendary blue hole-dwelling creature with a fearsome appetite.

For those ready to dive into adventure, Andros offers the world’s most densely packed collection of blue holes. These natural wonders, found both offshore and deep within the island’s forests, are a must-see for any yacht charter itinerary. Dive, snorkel, or simply marvel at the unique ecosystems within these geological marvels.
