Abacos Island: Chain of islands perfect for island-hopping

Abaco is a chain of islands sprinkled with cays and often called the "top of the Bahamas." These northernmost islands are a dream destination for yacht charters, offering a picture-perfect cruising playground for traditional sailors and power boaters. While the Bahamas has long been a favourite for all kinds of travellers, the Abacos offer a more “off-the-beaten-path” experience worth exploring before you cross the Bahamas off your bucket list.

Exploring the Abacos by yacht allows you to experience its many facets. You can start in No Name Cay, the Abacos’ version of Big Major Cay's most photographed pig beach. The only difference is that No Name Cay has fewer crowds, allowing more interaction time with the adorable pigs on the beach. For a beach bar experience, you can visit the famous Nippers on Great Guana Cay, a spot that’s even seen celebrities like Justin Bieber, who famously proposed there. Sundays are the prime time to visit for their Sunday Pig Roast parties.

If you’re into fishing, the Abacos Islands provide a great set-up. The Marls is a fishing haven where you can get the chance to catch nook, pompano, and more. Abacos Island is home to big fish, especially in Southern Abaco, where you will go deep-sea fishing to catch marlin, dorado, wahoo, and tuna. The Abacos Islands also hosts the Bahamas Billfish Challenge yearly and other fishing tournaments.

Fans of scuba diving always include Abacos Island on their short list of must-visit destinations. Great Abaco is known for its extensive underground cave, more known as Crystal Caves, with rooms full of stalactites. Walker Cay is a standout, too, as it is not only known for its underwater walls but also for its shark dive. For historic shipwrecks, Abacos has the USS Adirondack at Man-O-War Cay, the San Jacinto at Whale Cay, and the HMS Mermaid at Walker’s Cay.

But for newer divers, Abacos’ four cays and the many coral reefs south of Marsh Harbor are also beautiful places to explore, not just for its elkhorn corals but also to see green and hawksbill turtles.

Another charm of Abacos Islands is its Abaco National Park, which spans 32 square miles in South Abaco. Here, you can see Bahama parrots, loggerhead kingbirds, and others. For strolls, visit Green Turtle Cay to go sightseeing in the colourful buildings with white picket fences and other historical sites like the streets of New Plymouth. Another option is Elbow Cay’s iconic Elbow Reef Lighthouse, standing 89 feet tall. After soaking in panoramic views, sail toward Tahiti Beach.

Beach lovers will be in heaven here in Abacos. Treasure Cay, named one of National Geographic's top 10 beaches, is a crescent-shaped slice of paradise perfect for relaxation or a round of golf at the nearby championship course. And if you’re fortunate enough to find yourself in the Abacos during a full moon, visiting Cracker P’s is a must.

Whether exploring sun-drenched beaches, discovering underwater treasures, or soaking in the laid-back Bahamian charm, the Abacos Islands deliver unforgettable moments. Begin planning your dream getaway by browsing the luxury yachts and superyachts available for charter.
